Class Guidelines
Grades in Physical Education are on a pass/fail basis. The criteria for grading may include: effort, attitude, preparation, participation, and attendance, skill tests, knowledge tests, and achievement. Texts and assignments may be part of course work.
Off-Campus Courses are offered occasionally through the Department of Physical Education and Exercise Science. These courses may include ice-skating, ballet, horseback riding, or skiing. These courses cost extra and payments for instruction are made directly to the course instructor. Costs vary by activity. All costs and transportation arrangements are the responsibility of the student.
Intercollegiate sports participation is encouraged. Students participating in an intercollegiate sport may earn one credit towards the fulfillment of the physical education requirement.
Physical Education courses may not be repeated, but progressive levels are available in some areas. Students may withdraw from physical education courses by following the same procedures as a withdraw from an academic course.
The university provides equipment for classes. Equipment for recreational use may be checked out through the department. It is the policy of the university to charge for any equipment not returned or equipment that is damaged through negligence or misuse.
Appropriate attire is required for class. Attire is to permit freedom of movement and be acceptable in appearance. No jeans may be worn. Only sneakers may be worn in the gymnasiums. No rubber-soled shoes can be worn in place of sneakers. Sneakers must be flat and have secured insoles. No "heelless" sneakers are acceptable. Instructors of some classes may have specified attire due to the nature of the activity. All swim courses require a one-piece bathing suit.
All students should be dressed properly and ready to participate in class at the start time of the class. No dressing time will be taken for the class period.
All students are entitled to a gym locker with a combination lock. A locker request is to be made to the course instructor prior to or on the first day of class. No lockers will be issued after the first two weeks of the semester. The university is not responsible for the security of your personal belongings. Please make sure that your belongings are secured before you leave the locker room. It is recommended that jewelry and other valuables not be brought to class.
Should it become necessary to change class plans due to weather or any other unforeseen circumstance, a notice will be posted on the Physical Education board in Alumni Hall and/or Villa Maria or on the IC Intranet.
