Master of Arts in Nutrition Education

The Graduate Nutrition Education Department continues to meet this challenge by offering a diverse blend of coursework to meet the unique needs of every graduate student. Different options are available for obtaining a master’s degree in Nutrition Education depending upon the individual’s background and career goals.
Master of Arts Degree in Nutrition Education with Focus on Wellness Promotion
This option is designed for individuals from a variety of health and human performance disciplines who wish to add nutrition and wellness counseling expertise to their existing professional practices. The program provides a foundation in nutrition science, counseling and education skills, and practice-based research, combined with a range of elective course choices. The number and variety of elective choices allows the student to obtain a master's degree in Nutrition Education that is tailored to the individual's background and goals.
Master of Arts Degree in Nutrition Education for the Registered Dietitian
This option reflects the department's commitment to graduate education for
the registered dietitian (R.D.) who wishes to enhance existing knowledge and
skills. In addition to courses that provide updated nutrition science information,
required courses build understanding and application of principles of human
development, communication and counseling, and practice-based research. Since
the remaining 50% of credits are allocated to elective courses, the R.D. is
able to choose a program of study that is tailored to meet professional needs
and area(s) of interest.
Master of Arts degree in Nutrition Education combined with American Dietetic Association (ADA) Dietetic Internship
This option reflects the integration of the academic experience of the university with the medical and dietetic expertise of health care facilities in the surrounding geographical area. The supervised practice component endeavors to respond to the evolving changes of the profession of dietetics by leading students to become translators of theories of nutrition science, and by providing students with the opportunity to develop strong entry level dietetic performance skills through supervised practice.
The Dietetic Internship is currently granted accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education of the American Dietetic Association, 120 South Riverside Plaza, Suite 2000, Chicago, IL 60606-6995, a specialized accrediting body recognized by the Council on Postsecondary Accreditation and the United States Department of Education.
