Nursing Department Clinical Practicum Experience
Students complete a number of clinical practicum experiences in both the BSN and the MSN program. Each clinical practicum experience is conducted in conjunction with an academic seminar. Clinical practices are individualized for every student and their professional and educational goals. Each seminar is led by a faculty member who possesses appropriate licensure, certification, and skill. The faculty member reviews case material, fosters discussion among students, leads discussion of readings, and invites students to critique each other’s work in a supportive, learning environment.
The students in the BSN program participate in over 50 hours of clinical practicum experience associated with NUR 421 Individuals and Families in Crisis and and NUR 430 Community Health Principles and Practices. While the School Nursing Certificate requires the students spend 150 hours in clinical practice in a school setting.
The students in this MSN program will participate in individually structured clinical experiences that will increase their knowledge of health care, with a specific population. The student will spend 500 hours over three semesters working with a site preceptor, in direct or in-direct care of specific populations. During this clinical experience, the student will identify the five roles: practice, research, education, administration, and consultation of the advanced practice nurse. Additionally, the student will assess the needs of the specific population and either plan or carry out interventions to help this specific population maintain or attain health.
