Vision Statement
The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures will foster understanding among all peoples through the study of their languages, literatures and cultures, be a catalyst for justice and peace by improving cross-cultural communication, and provide the cultural intelligence tools needed to respond to the challenges of a global society.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of our major programs in foreign languages and literatures and in international business foreign language, students
will…

1. Demonstrate a knowledge of and an appreciation for the language and     culture of peoples other than their own by means of a program of     integration and cooperation for the purpose of better human relations and     world peace
2. Respond to the challenges of globalization facing our contemporary society     through the ability to interact with the world community and be prepared     with specialized cultural and linguistic training to assume careers in business     and industry in the global marketplace, in government and social service     work, in libraries and translation, and in education
3. Integrate and synthesize their foreign language experience with business,     education, political science and other disciplines within the liberal arts
4. Demonstrate a basic knowledge of the language and content of the great     works of ancient and modern authors in their historical setting, recognizing     that this heritage impacts the present and future
